Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing Safari: Mount Kilimanjaro, the world’s highest free-standing mountain, towers majestically over vast open plains with a permanently snow-covered peak which, on a clear day, can be seen from over 150kms away. With its gleaming glaciers providing a stunning back-drop for safaris in the surrounding area, Mount Kilimanjaro climbing is comprised of three extinct volcanoes: Kibo 5895m (19340ft), Mawenzi 5149m (16896ft) and Shira 3962m (13000ft). Kilimanjaro’s immense size and height – as well as its location near the equator and close to the Indian Ocean – strongly influence its climate and thus its vegetation, animal life and climbing conditions. To climb Mount Kilimanjaro is an experience of a lifetime, highly recommended to the adventurous traveler willing to forego some of life’s luxuries for a few days. The summit can be achieved by any physically fit person and no climbing experience is necessary.

Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing Safari – Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing Routes

Kilimanjaro has six starting gates, three points via which you can access the summit and two descent routes. Hence there are many tour routes, each with different scenery and varying degrees of exertion required. The Marangu and Rongai routes are wildly tipped as the “easiest” trails, and the Machame route is particularly renowned for its stunning scenery. Routes from Umbwe, Lemosho and Shira offer more challenging options. However, it is the duration of a climb that is as important as the ease of the route.

On climbs to the summit it is advisable to join a trek of at least 6 days in order to acclimatize your body to the increasing altitude as you pass through five different climatic zones. Our treks have been carefully devised at around this duration to give you the best chance of success. Longer duration can be arranged for those that would prefer a slower pace.

The Rongai route is the only trail to approach Mt Kilimanjaro from the North, on the Kenyan side of the mountain. The Rongai route is considered more scenic than the Marangu route, easier than the Machame route and has a high summit success rate.

Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing Safari Rongai route is also one of the quietest routes as it does not converge with any other route until it joins the Marangu for the ascent on the summit. Descent is again via the Marangu route on the southeast side of the mountain. This route is best done in 6 days allowing for good acclimatization. Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing Easy Climbing Marangu Trek is the most popular route

Tanzania Mountain HikingMount Kilimanjaro Climbing Safari Marangu Trek is the most popular route up Mount Kilimanjaro, and is in fact probably followed by 90% of all climbers. Despite the human traffic, it can be fun to come together with climbers from all over the world. It has a well-defined path, which has been well set out resulting to a ‘climber friendly trekking experience’. Marangu Trek is a very scenic route with good views of Mawenzi and excellent chances for viewing wildlife. Accommodation on this route is in mountain huts providing basic adequate shelter.

Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing Machame Trek is a more demanding but much less climber’s traffic

Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing Safari Machame Trek is a more demanding but much less traffic and scenic route up Mount Kilimanjaro. The trek is a day longer and the overnights on Mount Kilimanjaro are spent camping in tents, which are carried and pitched by the accompanying porters.

Highlights of this route are the Shira Plateau, Barranco Wall and the Karanga Valley reaching the summit via Stella Point. Because this route traverses river valleys on the Southern Slopes, it is recommended that trekkers must be physically fit, and with the additional day on trek to assist with acclimatization, there is a good chance of reaching the summit – Uhuru Peak.
