The Rwenzori Mountains lie along the western border of Uganda and rise to a height of 5,109 meters. Here are the legendary ‘Mountains of the Moon’, a World Heritage Site and these incomparable, beautiful, mists, shrouded peaks provide a unique backdrop to one of our most magnificent national parks. The highest of these peaks, and the third highest peak in Africa, is Mt. Margherita rising 5,109 metres above sea level. The Rwenzori Mountains were gazetted as a National Park in 1991.

Rwenzori Mountains National Park, which is now also a World Heritage Site, contains six of Africa’s 10 highest mountains, most of them higher than the tallest Alps. Yet to most bucket-list hikers they are largely unknown, overshadowed by Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya, Africa’s two highest mountains.
Although the isolated volcanoes of Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Kenya are taller, they are the highest range of mountains in Africa with the highest summit of Mt. Stanley reaching 5109 meters. When the peaks were first explored at the end of the 19th century, there were six separate massifs that held glaciers on their flanks. At this point, the number has dwindled down to just three, with one of those holding only tattered remnants of its earlier glaciation. The “Rwenzori ranges” area covers 2 National parks; Rwenzori Mountain National Park in Uganda and Virunga National park in DR Congo. The highest point is Margherita Peak on Mount Stanley (5,109m) however other high peaks include Mount Baker (4,843), Mount Speke (4,890), Mount Emin (4,798m), Mount Gessi(4,715m) and mount Luigi(4,627m) which also offer a very worthwhile adventure as well.
The mountains peaks are covered with Glaciers which is about half of the total number in Africa. This in addition to Lakes, Waterfalls, Unique Vegetation and wildlife gives it a clear edge as the best mountain to climb in Africa.

Rwenzori Mountains National Park covers nearly 100,000 ha in western Uganda and is Africa’s third highest peak with the Mount Margherita Peak rising to 5,109 m). The mountain is characterized by glaciers, waterfalls, and lakes that make it one of Africa’s most beautiful alpine areas. The park has many natural habitats of endangered species and a rich and unusual flora comprising, among other species, the giant heather.
The fascinating Rwenzori Mountains in the western Rift valley are some of the country’s prime features not to miss. Rwenzori’s features include geothermal activity, numerous lakes and jagged, Block Mountains known as the “mountains of the moon”. The mountains are a reflection of the Giant Roberia & Margherita glacier. Astride the mountains sits Queen Elizabeth National park home to the king of the jungle; lions and elephants, many hippos, buffalo and other animals it’s wonderful place.
Rwenzori Mountains National Park is also home to the hyrax, blue monkey, chimpanzee, giant forest hog and many unique bird species such as the Rwenzori touraco, the handsome francolin and the olive pigeon.
