What to Expect on a 3 Day Mombasa City Tour

Visit a series of exhibits inside the fort, which is also Mombasa’s oldest museum, following the history of local people, the Swahili language, and the sultans. Continue into Mombasa’s old town, where diverse historical architecture tells the story of the Africans, Arabs, Asians, Portuguese, and British who have shared the city for hundreds of years. Take in the elephant trunk monument, a poignant reminder of the now-illegal ivory trade that flourished in Mombasa.

Pass the atmospheric fish market, where local fishermen display each day’s catch, and take time to sample local dishes in the market (own expense)—visiting the market with the guide is a perfect way to learn about Mombasa specialties. Spend the afternoon in Haller Park, a wildlife sanctuary with a fish farm and reptile zoo. The park was constructed in a disused cement quarry, and has been transformed with hundreds of indigenous plants, casuarina trees, and other vegetation, which now support a thriving animal population. Try to spot some of the bush-pigs, giraffes, elands, and oryx that live within the park. After visiting the park, return to your Mombasa hotel, where this tour concludes.

Day 2Mombasa - Dhow Cruise

Explore Mombasa by Night

You will be taken to the old port and escorted onto to an authentic Arab Dhow. As the sun sets, you set sail into the harbor and past Fort Jesus. The dark African night sky full of stars, the lapping of waves against the Dhow, truly a romantic setting if ever there was one.

Then as you glide past Fort Jesus you are treated to a sound and light show that is absolutely spectacular. After the show you will make your landing and venture into the Fort for supper. When supper is done and you have had your fill, the night life begins!

Day 3Mombasa - Tamarind Dhow Dinner and Dance Cruise

This evening cruise is the most renown of all the coastal trips. An enchanting evening of exotic seafood blended with a romantic cruise aboard an authentic Arab Dhow around the old port of Mombasa Town. The dhow, Nawalilkher, was built in 1977 for trading.

Purchased in 1986, she was converted for restaurant use by her original builder Fundi Bini on Lamu Island, under the watchful eye of Mohamed Shale, who is still her captain today. An enchanting evening of exotic sea food blended with a romantic cruise aboard an authentic Arab Dhow.
