5 Days Mount Kenya Climbing Hiking Chogoria Route is the most scenic and interesting of the three main routes on the mountain. 5 Days Mount Kenya Climbing Hiking Chogoria Route takes you up Mt Kenya which is the second highest peak in Africa after its taller neighbor Mount Kilimanjaro, which lies some 320km away in the south and is visible on a clear day. 5 Days Mount Kenya Climbing Hiking Chogoria Route passes through the enchanting Hall Tarns and looks down sheer cliffs into the spectacular Gorges Valley and onto the beautiful Lake Michaelson.

5 Days Mount Kenya Climbing Hiking Chogoria Route takes you to the Mount Kenya Forest Reserve which provides the ideal habitat for vast herds of buffalo and elephant as well as a bright kaleidoscope of birds and other wildlife. At higher altitudes, the forest gives way to lush bamboo groves where Columbus monkeys leap and leopard prowl and, higher up, there is tussock grass and alpine moorlands, jewel-studded by icy glacial tarns and moraines.

Mt Kenya is the ultimate hiking and climbing destination in Kenya. It is the highest mountain in Kenya and the second highest in Africa at 5199m above sea level and features ice-capped peaks, outlandish glacial valleys, an array of crystal-clear glacial lakes (Tarns), and a myriad of other attractions.

This creative climb joins two of the most scenic routes up Mount Kenya, Sirimon and Chogoria, producing a remarkably diverse and spectacular trek. Sirimon coming off the west of Mount Kenya passes through the dry side of the mountain with its giant trees and rocky terrain, and the descent onto the Chogoria path is exactly different with its lush bamboo and highland forests. The final night time ascent of Point Lenana can be as difficult as any ascent in East Africa, but the rest of the trek is generally considered easier than either Kilimanjaro or the Ruwenzori’s, and this is the most likely climb for actually seeing big game. Accommodation on this hike is in mountain huts

5 Days Mount Kenya Climbing Hiking Chogoria Route
Mount Kenya Climbing Hiking Chogoria Route

Out of the three popular routes for climbing Mt Kenya, Chogoria Route is without question the most scenic and rewarding for hikers interested in seeing beautiful landscapes and the exotic flora on Mt Kenya. The Chogoria route is on the east side of the mountain while Naro Moru and Sirimon routes are on the west and north sides of the mountain respectively.

The Chogoria route is our recommended and arguably the most magnificent ascent route to the summit area. It is the driest route up the mountain and the walk beside the Gorges Valley truly spectacular. This trip allows 7 days with time to acclimatize and ascend the mountain in safety. The “Round the Peaks” circuit is justifiably a magnificent tour to complete offering ever new views of the summits, glaciers and tarns with their unique high altitude vegetation. The descent by the Sirimon route takes one through some beautiful forest tracks and completes the traverse of the mountain.

5 Days Mount Kenya Climbing Hiking Chogoria Route

Day 1of the 5 Days Mount Kenya Climbing Hiking Chogoria Route: Nairobi - Mount Kenya

Depart from Nairobi at 09:00hrs and proceed south towards the cool slopes of Mount Kenya. Cross the equator arrive in nanyuki in time for lunch. Proceed to the Park Gate at 2,850m. Our fist night will be at the camp.

Day 2of the 5 Days Mount Kenya Climbing Hiking Chogoria Route: Mount Kenya - Lake Ellis - 3600m Camp Site

After breakfast and sorting of porter loads we set off up the mountain at a nice and easy pace. A slightly longer walk via Lake Ellis gives scenic views of Mugi, Ithunguni and the Giants Billiards-table, whilst if we follow the river near road head, upstream for about 3 km, the foreground scenery and flora is particularly beautiful. Lunch by the stream banks then it’s time to cut up the left hand hillside to our camp at about 3,600m, well away from any of the more “touristy” areas.

Day 3of the 5 Days Mount Kenya Climbing Hiking Chogoria Route: Day 3: 3600m Camp Site - Lake Michaelson - Mintos Hut

From our campsite, we continue to move up through the moorland zone. As this area of the mountain is still off the beaten track, there are no paths to follow, and on each trip we vary the area we walk across. After about an hour, traverse left and join a ridge (slight path to follow) and join the normal Chogoria route to Minto’s Hut after about 4 hour walking. Lunch at a small stream crossing then 45 min on to a camp near Minto’s Hut. Short afternoon walk over to superb views across to “The Temple” and down to Lake Michaelson.

Day 4of the 5 Days Mount Kenya Climbing Hiking Chogoria Route: Mintos Hut - Meru, Mount Kenya Lodge

After pre dawn breakfast leave Mintos Hut for the summit passing near the Simba Tarn and Harris Tan to Point Lenana which is approximately 4 – 5 hours. After the sunrise at 6.30 and nice views of Kilimanjaro and the Coast line descend back to Mintos for full breakfast and thereafter descend to Meru. Dinner and overnight at the Bandas.

Day 5 of the 5 Days Mount Kenya Climbing Hiking Chogoria Route: Meru - Chogoria – Nairobi

After breakfast walk for 15km downhill through the dense rain and bamboo forests to connect the 4WD jeep to Chogoria Town. Then after lunch at Chogoria drive back to Nairobi for your next destination.
