Hiking in the wonderful and scenic hike Mount Kenya National Park is undeniably at its best during the dry months of January, February, late August and September. October is equally good for trekking. Choose our 6 Days Mount Kenya Trekking: Sirimon – Chogoria Route which combines the best routes with an ascent from Sirimon route and descent via the most breathtaking Chogoria route. What to Expect on 6 Days Mount Kenya Trekking Sirimon-Chogoria Route

Gradual Paced ascent up via Sirimon route to the summit circuit trek before summit and quick descent down through Chogoria route. This itinerary uses the gentlest ascent trail up Mount Kenya and is tailored to provide extremely effective acclimatization by having extra but shorter walking days during the trek. On the way up you split the distance to the base of the peaks into 3 bits rather than the usual 2, then skirt the high peaks in the anticlockwise direction in 2 moderate bits completing the summit circuit trek with reasonable ease. On the trek around the peaks you pass Hausberg col 4,600m and enjoy splendid views of the rocky towers, tarns and suspended glaciers of the west face of Batian peak. Then descend down the Teleki valley and join the Naromoru summit trail and overnight at Mackinder’s camp. An early morning hike on day 6 gets us to Point Lenana, 4,985m – the hikers’ summit then a quick descent on the Chogoria trail.

6 Days Mount Kenya Trekking Sirimon-Chogoria Route

Day 1Nairobi- Nanyuki – Old Moses camp ( 3,300m)

After pick up in Nairobi drive to Nanyuki town for lunch crossing the equator en route to the Sirimon Park gate(2660m). From the gate, we trek up thro magnificent montane forest, bamboo and giant heather zone before reaching the high altitude moorland and our first hut (Old Moses camp) for dinner and overnight.
This is a gentle trek that takes 3 – 4 hrs gaining an elevation of 680m.

Day 2Old Moses – Shipton camp (4200m)

Early morning start through Ontulili river up the spectacular mackinders valley via liki north ridge with picnic lunch en route arriving in Shipton camp in 7 hrs time.

This camp is a surreal setting below the towering peaks and glacier. Resident population is of Rock hyrax and sun birds. Dinner and overnight at the camp

Day 3Full Day acclimatization

For better acclimatization you can take a rest day at the Shipton camp. Short walks / day hikes are possible on the summit climb to Oblong and Hausberg tarns gaining an elevation of 370m before returning to the camp for lunch. Afternoon is at leisure.
N.B: Climbing high and sleeping low is excellent for acclimatization – but you can do that almost as well toughing in the sun watching the eagles!

Day 4Shipton Camp – Mackinders Camp (4,300m)

From Shipton’s camp the trail leads to Kami camp below the north face of Batian. Continuing west – southwest the trails climbs up switchbacks in the fine snow before reaching Hausberg Col at 4590m. We will descend into the upper Hausberg valley and rest at the oblong and Hausberg tarns. Ascending to the crest of a ridge known as Arthur’s seat we see the trail winding along a beautiful series of rock ledges. We will descend to Mackinder’s camp for the night.

Day 5Mackinders Camp – Point Lenana (4,985m) – Bandas

An early 2.30 am start for an attempt to reach point Lenana in time for sunrise.
The climb takes 4 hrs and to add to the exhilaration, Kilimanjaro is also visible from the horizon. Descend to mintos hut for full breakfast. After a short rest descend further to Mt Kenya bandas through the gorges valley for dinner & overnight.
You can enjoy log fires, hot showers and bed at the Bandas!

Day 6Meru Banda – Chogoria town – Nairobi

After breakfast, descend on a broad track through bamboo and virgin rain forest to meet vehicle for transfer to Chogoria town and on to Nairobi arriving late evening.
