8 Days Kilimanjaro Climbing Lemosho Route is considered the most scenic trail on Kilimanjaro, granting panoramic vistas on various sides of the mountain. As one of the newer routes, 8 Days Kilimanjaro Climbing Lemosho Route is a superb choice for your climb. Kilimanjaro Climbing Lemosho Route is our preferred route due to its ideal balance of low crowds, beautiful scenery and a high summit success rate. We specialize in guiding on the Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing Lemosho Route. Most of our clients climb Kilimanjaro using this route and they consistently report that they loved it. Thus, Lemosho is highly recommended.

8 Days Kilimanjaro Climbing Lemosho Route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the west, beginning with a long drive from Moshi to Londorossi Gate. From there, the first two days are spent trekking through the rain forest to Shira Ridge. The 8 Days Kilimanjaro Climbing Lemosho Route crosses the entire Shira Plateau from west to east in a pleasant, relatively flat hike. Crowds are low until the route joins the Machame route near Lava Tower. Then the 8 Days Kilimanjaro Climbing Lemosho Route traverses underneath Kilimanjaro’s Southern Ice Field on a path known as the Southern Circuit before summiting from Barafu. Descent is made via the Mweka route.

Lemosho Route is the most affluent and beautiful trail for trekking on Kilimanjaro, and also one of the best route for acclimatization and is very successful. Compared to other trails like Machame, Marangu and Rongai, 8 Days Kilimanjaro Climbing Lemosho Route begins higher up the mountain at 2250 meters above sea level and climbs slowly over 70 kilometers. It is actually an improvement on the original Shira Route which gains altitude faster and a shorter route but offers very low and poor acclimatization advantage.

8 Days Kilimanjaro Climbing Lemosho Route Tour Details
/Parking List

The primary disadvantage of Lemosho is that it has very high trekker traffic starting on the fifth day when three other trails (Machame, Shira and Umbwe) congregate at the junction towards Barranco Camp making it a less discerning route onwards in comparison to Rongai which has the least ascend traffic till you get to Kibo where it converges with Marangu. 8 Days Kilimanjaro Climbing Lemosho Route offers the best chances of any route to acclimatize to the altitude and with that much better summit chances. The fact that you are likely to climb this route with a quality Kilimanjaro tour operator also means your success chances are much better than average.

Take the challenging and less-travelled Lemosho route, considered by many to be the most beautiful path up the western breach of the mountain, to the Shira Plateau. This adventure starts off with a few long days as you gain altitude, and has several days built in to help you acclimatize, improving your chances of making the summit. Enjoy the climb through magnificent forests and moorland, and emerge into high-alpine deserts as you enjoy spectacular views along the way to the summit.

What to Expect on 8 Days Kilimanjaro Climbing Lemosho Route
/Parking List

The Lemosho Route is relatively new. It starts on the Western side of Mount Kilimanjaro at the Londorossi Gate and was introduced as an alternative to the Shira Route which begins at a higher, more challenging altitude. The Lemosho Route joins the Machame Route at Lava Tower and heads down towards Barranco Valley via the Southern Circuit (see map below). As with the Machame Route, Lemosho trekkers need to transverse the Barranco Wall and then summit from Barafu Camp.

Most trekkers complete the Lemosho Route in eight days; however some tour operators offer seven day treks and six day hikes (not recommended) on the Lemosho. The 8-day variation is great for acclimatization and of course increases the probability of success. The Lemosho Route departs from the far West side of Mount Kilimanjaro. Getting to Londorossi Gate (2,100 meters) takes approximately 2 hours from Moshi and longer from Arusha. At the gate you will register with the Kilimanjaro National Park authorities before getting back into vehicles to be transported to the starting point which is a further 12km from Londorossi.

Day 2Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa - Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp

We continue on the trail leading out of the rain forest and into a savannah of tall grasses, heather and volcanic rock draped with lichen beards. Here we catch our first glimpse of Kibo across the plateau.

We explore the Shira Plateau for a full day. It is a gentle walk east on moorland meadows towards Shira 2 Camp. Then we divert from the main trail to Moir Hut, a little used site on the base of Lent Hills. A variety of walks are available on Lent Hills making this an excellent acclimatization opportunity. We descend down to Barranco Camp through the strange but beautiful Senecio Forest to an altitude of 13,000 ft. Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert

Day 7 Of the 8 Days Kilimanjaro Climbing Lemosho Route: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak

Very early in the morning (around midnight), we begin our push to the summit. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek. The wind and cold at this elevation and time of day can be extreme. We ascend in the darkness for several hours while taking frequent, but short, breaks. Near Stella Point (18,900 ft), you will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see coming over Mawenzi Peak. Finally, we arrive at Uhuru Peak- the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa.

From the summit, we now make our descent continuing straight down to the Mweka Hut camp site, stopping at Barafu for lunch. The trail is very rocky and can be quite hard on the knees; trekking poles are helpful. Mweka Camp is situated in the upper forest and mist or rain can be expected in the late afternoon. Later in the evening, we enjoy our last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep.
