Masai Mara Wildebeest Migration Safari

The Masai Mara Wildebeest Migration Safari tour is a recent phenomenon (the ’60s and ’70s was the biggest boom) with about 250,000 Individuals. Gradually, with time the number has risen to the current population of over 3,000,000 Individuals. Add to it an estimated 1,500,000 Zebras, and the result is one of the most magnificent scenes in the world. The massive display attracts hundreds of big cats as the populations provide abundant prey. The giant African crocodiles lie in wait, patiently, as the big herds come to cross the river or to drink.

Masai Mara Wildebeest Migration Safari

The Masai Mara Wildebeest Migration Safari tour has to cross the Mara River in the Maasai Mara where crocodiles will prey on them. This is one of the highlights as the animals try and cross the Mara River alive. In the Maasai Mara they will be hunted, stalked, and run down by the larger carnivores. The Maasai Mara also has one of the largest densities of lion in the world and is no wonder this is the home of the BBC wildlife channels Big Cat Diary.

Masai Mara Wildebeest Migration Safari Tour Itinerary

Day 1Maasai Mara Wildebeest Migration Safari tour - NAIROBI - MAASAI MARA

Departing from Nairobi after breakfast, you will drive along the floor of the famous Great Rift Valley on your way to the Maasai Mara. Along the way, you’ll stop at the Great Rift Valley viewpoint for a stunning panorama of the lakes, plains, and volcanic terrain that dominate the region. You’ll later stop in the Maasai town of Narok to stretch your legs before continuing on to Kenya’s most famous reserve. You’ll arrive at your lodge in time for lunch and then head out on an afternoon game drive in the park.

Day 2Maasai Mara Wildebeest Migration Safari Tour - MAASAI MARA

Wake before the dawn for the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness a Maasai Mara sunrise. After a quick cup of coffee, you’ll head out into the park to watch as the sun sets fire to the savannah and the big cats take advantage of the morning cool to search for a meal.

Alternatively, you can take to the skies with a hot air balloon safari that will see you soar above all of the action before setting down on the plains for a champagne breakfast among the wildlife. Ask your safari expert about adding a hot air balloon adventure to your safari.

You’ll then return to your lodge for a late breakfast before packing a picnic lunch and heading back out into the park for a day-long exploration of the Maasai Mara. You may also opt to relax at your lodge in the morning, enjoy lunch on-site, and then head out again in the afternoon once the weather has cooled off a bit.

Day 3Maasai Mara Wildebeest Migration Safari Tour - MAASAI MARA

Since the movements of the Wildebeest Migration can be unpredictable, we’ve budgeted for an extra day here in the Maasai Mara to increase your chances of witnessing the famous river crossing.

Each year the entire herd must attempt the treacherous crossing of the Mara River, where they contend not only with strong currents, but also with the always hungry Nile crocodiles who call the river home. It takes a lot of patience and more than a little luck, but witnessing the dramatic river crossing is a bucket-list-worthy item.
